What It Takes to Lead Leaders

There is growing consensus worldwide, that we lack the strength of leadership needed to navigate through the current quagmire in which we find ourselves. We need to find a way to get through the current climate crisis, and get those involved in global conflict to talk to one another through diplomatic means. In SA, we need to resolve the unemployment crisis, find a sustainable solution to our power issues, and help South Africa become the economy it can be – and that our people deserve it to be.

“There is a very common misconception when it comes to leaders,” says Eileen Thornhill, Director of The LLC Academy. “And that is that leaders are born, not made. Leadership can be learned and grown. We offer a range of leadership programmes that cater to where our students are in terms of the development of their leadership skills and the leadership pipeline. They are, respectively, Leaders of Self, Leaders of Others, and Leaders of Leaders.”

While the Leaders of Self bouquet of programmes focuses on developing a learner into someone who can function successfully in the business environment, and the Leaders of Others bouquet is dedicated to evolving a learner into an effective team member and leader, the Leaders of Leaders programmes are tailored towards the realisation of the need for strategic, creative thinking.

“Strategic leadership is a leader’s ability to visualise, plan, lead, and make the best of the resources that they have on hand,” says Thornhill. “It requires the ability to think strategically, make decisions strategically, and have the confidence and willingness to implement those plans. But to be a true Leader of Leaders, you also need to be a creative thinker, in order to see solutions where others can merely see problems.”

“A leader of leaders also benefits from a clear sense of their own values and purpose,” says Thornhill. “Creating congruence between one’s purpose and values is a sure-fire way to ensure that you will have the drive and determination to continue on your path when things get truly difficult. Having a clear vision of what you want to achieve, and the importance of achieving that goal ensures that you will have the will to prevail.”

“Leadership – good, effective leadership that leads to a better life for all – is no easy task,” says Thornhill. “It requires creativity, the ability to be strategic, and a sense of purpose to push you through when others simply cannot keep up. If you truly seek to be a Leader of Leaders, it is vital to equip yourself with the skills necessary to do so.”
